Petsmont Buddy Guard vs Real Mushrooms 5 Defenders
Two fruiting-body mushroom supplements from two serious companies. We put both labels side by side and did the arithmetic on what actually reaches your dog each day.
Read this bit first
We make one of the two products on this page. That is a real bias and you should hold everything below against it.
So here is the rule we set ourselves: every claim about Real Mushrooms is a number or a sentence from their own product page. No invented weaknesses, no column of red X marks. And there is a section near the bottom called where they beat us, because in a few specific ways they do.
Both labels say "fruiting body." Only one tells you how much you get.
Real Mushrooms and Petsmont agree on the thing most of this category gets wrong. Neither uses mycelium grown on grain. Both use extracts from actual mushrooms. Both publish third-party testing. If you are choosing between these two, you have already skipped past the products that are mostly milled rice.
So the argument moves to a narrower question: how many milligrams of beta-glucans does your dog actually receive per day at each brand's own recommended dose?
Both labels give you what you need to work it out.
5 Defenders for pets is a 300 mg capsule. Their label states beta-(1,3)(1,6)-glucans at 60 mg per capsule — that is 20% of the capsule. Their dose is one capsule per 20 lbs of body weight, once daily.
Buddy Guard is a powder guaranteed at 37%+ beta-glucans across the whole blend. The dose is ¼ teaspoon — half a gram — per 25 lbs of body weight.
Run that for a 50 lb dog and the gap is not close. It is two and a half times.

own labelled dose
Buddy Guard: 1 g × 37% = 370 mg. 5 Defenders: 2.5 capsules × 60 mg = 150 mg. Both figures use each brand's own published dosing chart.

| 50 lbs | 370 mg | 150 mg | $0.72 | $0.83 |

The part of a capsule that is not mushroom
A capsule has to be a capsule. It needs a shell, and powder does not flow through encapsulation machinery on its own, so it needs help. The 5 Defenders pet capsule lists hypromellose for the shell, plus microcrystalline cellulose and silicon dioxide.
Real Mushrooms is upfront about why, and we will quote the logic fairly: natural ingredients do not always flow smoothly through processing equipment, so capsule manufacturers use small amounts of other ingredients. That is true, it is standard, and it is not a scandal.
It is just a cost that a powder does not pay. Buddy Guard is nine mushroom extracts and nothing else. There is no shell, no flow agent, no anti-caking additive, because a jar with a spoon does not need any of it.
Then there is the daily negotiation
Real Mushrooms' own FAQ suggests several ways to get the capsule into your pet: open it and sprinkle the powder over food, or hide the whole capsule in a pill pocket, cheese, a little butter, or a meatball.
Read that again, because it is the whole argument. If the recommended workaround is to open the capsule and sprinkle the powder on food, you were always going to end up feeding a powder. You are just paying for a shell first, and taking 20% beta-glucans instead of 37%+.
And the cheese matters too. A daily cube of cheddar for a senior dog on a weight-management plan is not nothing, twice a day, for a year.
Four mushrooms in one jar and not the other
5 Defenders is turkey tail, reishi, maitake, shiitake and chaga. Those five are the backbone of the category and they are all in Buddy Guard too.
Buddy Guard adds four more: Lion's Mane, associated with gut health and nutrient absorption; Cordyceps, associated with energy and endurance; Agaricus Blazei, one of the most beta-glucan-dense functional mushrooms; and Tremella, associated with skin comfort and antioxidant support.
Whether nine beats five is a judgement call, not a fact, and a brand that gave you five well-chosen mushrooms at a real dose would be a perfectly good buy. It is worth knowing what is and is not in the jar you are already using.

Where they beat us
Three of them, honestly:
A longer guarantee
Their satisfaction guarantee runs 100 days. Ours runs 90. If you want the longest possible window to change your mind, theirs is longer and we are not going to pretend ten days is nothing.
Depth of pedigree
Fifty-plus years of mushroom growing in the founding family, a veterinary formulator with forty years of clinical practice, and a top rating in the ConsumerLab annual survey. That is a genuinely deep bench and it is not something a newer brand can simply claim.
Capsules travel better
No spoon, no measuring, no jar to spill in a bag. If you board your dog, travel constantly, or hand feeding duties to someone else, a counted capsule is genuinely simpler than a measured scoop.
So which should you buy?
- Your dog swallows pills without complaint and you value the simplicity — 5 Defenders is a good product, keep going.
- You are already opening the capsules onto food — switch. You are doing the powder routine at the capsule price.
- You want the most beta-glucans per day, and per dollar — Buddy Guard, by roughly 2.5×.
- You want Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Agaricus Blazei or Tremella in the blend — only Buddy Guard has them.
- You want the longest possible refund window — theirs, at 100 days.
Switching from capsules
